My dryer smells like it's burning — what do I do?

A burning smell from a dryer is the one symptom we tell you to take seriously right now, because a dryer is the single most common household appliance fire. Most of the time it's lint that has built up near the heat — cleanable — but it can also be a failing belt, motor, or element. Stop the dryer, and work through this before you run it again.

⚠ Safety first: Stop using the dryer immediately and unplug it (or flip its breaker; shut off the gas on a gas dryer). Do not run it unattended until you know what the smell is. Dryers cause thousands of home fires a year, almost all from lint near the heat source. If you ever see smoke or smell something electrical/melting, keep it off and call a pro.

The most likely causes

Lint buildup near the heater (most common) Moderate DIY check

Lint collects in the lint trap, the vent, and inside the cabinet near the heating element or burner. When it gets hot enough it scorches — that's the burning smell, and it's the #1 dryer-fire cause.

Check it: Clean the lint screen every load. Then clean the full vent path from the dryer to the outside wall — a clogged vent is the usual culprit. If the smell is strong or the dryer is very hot, have a tech open the cabinet and clear lint from around the element/burner.

Worn or broken drive belt Technician

A slipping or frayed belt rubbing on the drum or motor gets hot and puts off a rubbery burning smell, sometimes with a squeal.

Check it: If the smell is rubbery and you hear a squeal or the drum drags, stop and have the belt (and idler) checked — an affordable, common repair.

Failing motor Technician

A motor that's wearing out or has a seized bearing overheats and smells electrical or hot.

Check it: An electrical/hot-metal smell with a straining or humming motor is a tech job — don't keep running it.

Heating element or wiring shorting Technician

A cracked element touching the housing, or a scorched wire/connector, gives a sharp electrical burning smell.

Check it: Professional — an electrical burning smell means it stays off until a tech inspects the element and wiring.

Something on the clothes (harmless) Easy DIY check

Occasionally the smell is melted crayon, a lost lighter, or residue on a new load, not the dryer itself.

Check it: Check the drum and the load for anything that could melt. If the drum is clean and the smell persists, treat it as one of the causes above.

Is it worth fixing?

Usually repair — a vent cleaning or a belt is inexpensive, and even a motor or element is well below a new dryer. But this is a safety issue first: get the burning smell diagnosed before you weigh cost. Never run a burning-smelling dryer to "see if it stops."

Common questions

Why does my dryer smell like burning?

Almost always lint that has built up near the heating element or burner and is scorching — the #1 dryer-fire cause. Clean the lint screen and the full vent path first. If the smell is rubbery (belt), electrical (motor/wiring), or very strong, stop using it and have a tech open the cabinet. Don't keep running a burning-smelling dryer.

Is a dryer that smells like burning dangerous?

Yes — take it seriously. Dryers cause thousands of home fires a year, nearly all from lint near the heat. Stop the dryer, unplug it, and don't run it unattended until you know the smell is just cleaned-up lint and not a belt, motor, or wiring problem.

Can I fix a burning dryer smell myself?

The most common cause — lint — you can help by cleaning the screen and the vent line. But if that doesn't clear it, or the smell is electrical or rubbery, the cabinet needs opening and that's a tech job for safety. Your $50 Quick Check credits toward the repair.
