My refrigerator ice maker is leaking water — what do I do?

Answered by Teddy Pivacek, owner & lead technician at TN Appliance Exchange — repairing appliances since 2012.

Quick answer: Usually the fridge isn't level, so water spills out of the fill cup before it freezes — or the water inlet valve is dripping and overfilling the mold. Start by putting a level on top of the fridge and adjusting the front legs so it tilts slightly back.

Water pooling in the ice bin, dripping down the freezer wall, or running onto the floor from the ice maker almost always comes down to water going somewhere it shouldn't before it freezes. Most causes are simple and cheap. Here's what we check, in order, and what's safe to look at yourself.

⚠ Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before pulling it out or working near the water line, and shut off the water supply valve behind or under the fridge first.

The most likely causes

Refrigerator not level Easy DIY check

If the fridge tilts forward, water can spill out of the ice maker fill cup before it has a chance to freeze — so you get a puddle instead of cubes. This is the single most common cause and costs nothing to fix.

Check it: Put a level on top of the fridge. It should sit dead level or tilt very slightly back. Adjust the front leveling legs until it does.

Water inlet valve not shutting off Technician

The inlet valve opens to fill the ice mold, then closes. When it wears out it can drip continuously, overfilling the mold and leaking water down and out.

Check it: If you see the mold overfilling or a steady drip even between cycles, the valve is likely leaking. Replacement is a technician repair.

Frozen or misaligned fill tube Moderate DIY check

The small tube that delivers water to the ice maker can freeze up or sit off-center, so water sprays or dribbles past the mold instead of into it.

Check it: With the ice maker off and the fridge unplugged, you can thaw a visibly iced fill tube with a hair dryer on low. If it re-freezes, the water pressure or valve is the deeper issue.

Cracked fill cup or ice mold Technician

The plastic cup/mold that holds the water before it freezes can crack with age, letting water escape.

Check it: A visible crack in the fill cup or mold points here. Replacement is a technician repair.

Water pressure too high or line issue Easy DIY check

Very high household water pressure, or a partially kinked supply line, can make the valve overfill or leak.

Check it: Check the supply line behind the fridge for kinks and make sure the shutoff is fully open (not cracked-open). Pressure regulation is a plumbing matter.

Is it worth fixing?

Leveling, a fill-tube thaw, or a supply-line kink cost nothing. An inlet valve or fill cup is an affordable part and a straightforward repair — an ice maker leak is almost always worth fixing rather than replacing the fridge.

Common questions

Why is my ice maker leaking water instead of making ice?

Usually the fridge isn't level, so water spills out of the fill cup before it freezes — or the water inlet valve is dripping and overfilling the mold. Start by putting a level on top of the fridge and adjusting the front legs so it tilts slightly back.

Can I fix an ice maker that's leaking myself?

You can safely level the fridge, check the supply line for kinks, and confirm the shutoff valve is fully open. Thawing a frozen fill tube is doable with the unit unplugged. A leaking inlet valve or cracked fill cup is a technician repair.

Is a leaking ice maker worth repairing?

Yes — the common causes are free (leveling) or an affordable part (inlet valve). It's well worth fixing, and left alone a steady leak can damage your floor or cause ice buildup in the freezer.
