The usual culprit is a clogged pump filter — the "coin trap" — and clearing it is something most people can do themselves. Here's the exact order a tech works it.
This is the overwhelming cause of F21. Coins, lint, hairpins, and small items collect in the filter behind the small panel on the lower front and block the drain.
Check it: Open the lower-front access panel, put down towels, and slowly unthread the round filter — a lot of water will come out, so drain it in stages into a pan. Clean everything out and reseat it snugly.
A drain hose kinked behind the washer, or pushed too far down the standpipe, stops the water from leaving and triggers F21.
Check it: Pull the washer out gently, straighten any kinks, and make sure the hose only goes a few inches into the standpipe.
If the wall drain the hose empties into is partially blocked, water backs up and the washer reads it as a failed drain.
Check it: Remove the hose from the standpipe and pour water in — if it backs up, the house drain needs clearing.
If the coin trap and hoses are clear but F21 persists, the drain pump motor has likely failed.
Check it: Listen during the drain step — no pump sound with a clean filter points at the pump, a straightforward tech replacement.
