F8E1 on a Whirlpool washer (shown as "LF" — Long Fill — on many models) means the machine started but water isn't coming in fast enough, so it flags a fill fault. Like most fill problems, it's usually something simple upstream of the washer that you can rule out in a couple minutes. Here's the order a tech checks it.
The most common cause: one or both of the hot/cold valves behind the washer got bumped partway closed, so water trickles in instead of filling. A single valve off can trigger LF even with the other on.
Check it: Reach behind the washer and make sure both the hot and cold supply valves are turned fully open.
Small mesh filters sit where the fill hoses screw into the back of the washer. Sediment and hard-water buildup clog them and choke the fill — very common on older installs.
Check it: Turn off the valves, unscrew the fill hoses at the washer, and check the little mesh screens inside the inlet ports. Rinse or gently clean out the grit, then reconnect.
A kinked hose behind the washer, or genuinely low household water pressure, both starve the fill and throw LF.
Check it: Pull the washer out gently and straighten any kink. If other faucets nearby are also weak, it may be a house-pressure issue.
The washer's electric inlet valve opens to let water in. If it's failed or clogged internally, the washer can't fill even with the supply wide open and clean screens.
Check it: If the valves are open, screens are clean, and hoses are straight but you still get F8E1/LF, the inlet valve is the likely part — a tech diagnosis and replacement.
