Unbalanced or overloaded loads
Bulky single items (a comforter, a bath mat) or a too-full drum throw off balance and slam the tub against the cabinet on spin. It's the most common cause and often costs nothing to correct.
Worn suspension rods or shock absorbers
These dampen the tub's movement. When they wear out — common on front-loaders after years of use — the drum swings freely and the whole machine rocks and walks. A very fixable, common repair.
Unlevel machine or bad feet
A washer that isn't level, or that has a collapsed leveling foot, rocks on spin. Floors that flex (second-story laundry, older joists) make it worse. Leveling is quick; a broken foot is a cheap part.
Failing drum bearings
A loud grinding or growl that builds with spin speed points to worn tub bearings. Left too long, a bad bearing can damage the outer tub — this is the one to catch early.
Shipping bolts still installed
On a newly-delivered front-loader, the transit bolts holding the drum for shipping are sometimes left in. The machine shakes violently until they're removed. Always worth checking on a recent install.
